Atlas Copco's patented Air retun tensioner range

The Airbac tensioner is a patented design developed by our team here at Atlas Copco. Standard tensioners are spring assisted, however, this has airbac patented technology and retracts much more easily than a standard tensioner.
The Airbac tensioner can be used on all the applications on which a standard tensioner can be used on, however this offers a much quicker process with less strain on the elbow over time.

What is an Airbac tensioner?

Typical applications

There are many applications suitable for topside tensioners, as they can be used across several different industries including wind and oil & gas. Likely if you can use a CTST topside tensioner, then you will be able to use an Airbac tensioner and potentially even a hydraulic nut depending on the stud:

Potential savings considering the time saving on alone piston retract can go upto £80,000 in case of a major shut down.

We considered that tensioners are bought as a long term investment and a medium scale service providers or contractors will do at least 3-4 shut downs a year.

Airbac vs Spring return: The benefits of Air

Spring return tensioners (SRT), even with spring assistance, they still need a couple of manual turnings of the insert to bring the piston down.
The weight of the Airbac is almost 20% less than SRT.
Bigger-sized tensioners (SRT 4,5,6) spring return is less effective due to the weight and space limitations.
In case of 50% tensioning, “A” pressure may not be achieved in one go, so tighten twice for A pressure, one for B pressure and then for check pass. All these times, operator grips, twist and force down piston which leads to fatigue, injuries and waste of time.
